Nina Ozbey: Artist Statement

My work is about freedom, about opening myself up. In my non-objective, action paintings I let go of subject matter to think about composition, color and line, all the elements of design. To me, it is all about the process of putting paint onto canvas or paper, and the choices made as each work builds and evolves.

I work off the first brushstroke for often that dictates the rest of the work. I take pleasure in making marks, and how each stroke relates to and energizes the next. The paintings are records of my actions, webs of gestures that embrace something new and unseen.

In the end I seek in my work something different that no one has done before. They are not about communicating something specific, but come from a place without rules. Freed from realism, these paintings bring with them a sense of movement and joy.
